πŸ’§ Comino & the Blue Lagoon

Malta's most iconic destination β€” crystal-clear turquoise water, dramatic limestone cliffs and unforgettable scenery

About Comino

Comino is the smallest of the three Maltese islands, covering just 3.5 square kilometres between Malta and Gozo. Almost entirely uninhabited, it is a protected nature reserve with no cars, no noise and extraordinary natural beauty.

The island is famous worldwide for its Blue Lagoon β€” a sheltered bay with water so clear and so intensely turquoise it almost looks artificial. On a calm sunny day it is one of the most beautiful places in the entire Mediterranean.

Beyond the Blue Lagoon, Comino offers walking trails, the 17th-century Santa Maria Tower, secluded coves and rich birdlife. Most visitors come for the day but it is possible to stay overnight at the island's small hotel during summer.

What to See and Do on Comino

πŸ’§
Blue Lagoon

The star attraction β€” swim, snorkel and float in impossibly clear turquoise water. Best before 11am to avoid the crowds.

🏊
Santa Maria Bay

A quieter, less crowded bay on the east of the island β€” worth the 20-minute walk for calmer water and fewer visitors.

🏰
Santa Maria Tower

A 17th-century watchtower built by the Knights of St John. Climb for panoramic views across all three Maltese islands.

✨
Crystal Lagoon

A smaller, even clearer inlet next to the Blue Lagoon β€” often overlooked by visitors but absolutely stunning and less busy.

πŸ¦…
Comino Nature Walks

The whole island is walkable in under 2 hours. Spring brings wildflowers; birdwatchers visit for migratory species.

🌊
Sea Caves

Accessible only by boat β€” the dramatic limestone caves around the Comino coastline are one of the highlights of any day cruise.

πŸ’‘ Top Tips for Visiting Comino

  • Go early or late: The Blue Lagoon gets extremely crowded 11am to 3pm in summer. Take the first boat at 8-9am or go after 3pm.
  • Bring everything you need: Food, water, sunscreen and snorkelling gear. The kiosk on the island is expensive and limited.
  • Book a cruise, not just a ferry: Day cruise boats include snorkelling equipment, often food and a guide. Worth every cent.
  • Avoid July and August weekends: The lagoon can have hundreds of boats anchored. May, June and September are far more enjoyable.
  • Wear reef shoes: The rocks around the Blue Lagoon are slippery. There is no sandy beach β€” entry is off the rocks.
