❓ Malta FAQ

The most commonly asked questions about visiting Malta — answered quickly and clearly

Malta is an EU member state and Schengen Area country. EU/EEA citizens need only a valid ID card or passport. Most other nationalities can visit visa-free for up to 90 days. Non-EU citizens should check their specific country's requirements at the Maltese government website.
Malta uses the Euro (€). ATMs are widely available across Malta and Gozo. Major credit and debit cards are accepted almost everywhere. You do not need to carry large amounts of cash.
Yes — English is one of Malta's two official languages (alongside Maltese). Virtually everyone in Malta speaks excellent English. You will have no language barrier whatsoever.
Malta is consistently ranked as one of Europe's safest countries. Violent crime targeting tourists is extremely rare. The main concerns are petty theft in crowded areas and road safety. Use normal common sense and you will be perfectly fine.
April-June and September-October are ideal — warm, sunny weather without peak-season crowds. July-August is extremely hot (30-35°C) and very busy. Winter is mild and excellent for culture and history. Malta genuinely has no bad season.
Malta has an extensive public bus network (€1.50 per journey). Bolt and official taxis are widely available. Car hire is recommended for flexibility — drive on the left. For Gozo, take the free passenger ferry from Cirkewwa in northern Malta.
The Gozo Channel ferry runs 24 hours from Cirkewwa (north Malta) to Mgarr (Gozo). The crossing takes 25 minutes. Foot passengers travel free in both directions. Cars cost approximately €4.65 on the return journey.
Take a boat from any Malta harbour — ferries from Cirkewwa, or boat trips from Sliema, St Julian's and Valletta. Day cruises (around €25-50) are better value than the basic ferry as they include sea caves and snorkelling equipment.
EU citizens should bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/GHIC). Non-EU visitors should ensure they have comprehensive travel insurance covering medical treatment. Malta has excellent private hospitals.
St John's Co-Cathedral in Valletta (book tickets in advance), the Blue Lagoon on Comino, the walled city of Mdina, a Gozo day trip, the prehistoric temples of Hagar Qim, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum (book months ahead), and at least one Maltese village festa if timing allows.
Excellent. Malta has calm, clear water ideal for children, a wealth of history that older kids love, Popeye Village for younger children, good water parks and family-friendly beaches like Mellieha Bay. English is universal so there's no language barrier.
Pastizzi (flaky pastries, 30-50c each), ftira (sourdough sandwich), rabbit stew (fenek), octopus stew, fresh fish, gbejniet (goat cheese) and Kinnie (the local soft drink). For sweets try imqaret (date pastries) and helwa tat-Tork (sesame nougat).
