Best Time to Visit Malta

🌸

Spring — April and May

5/5 Best overall

22-25C. Ideal for sightseeing. Wildflowers everywhere. Sea still cool at 18-20C. Smaller crowds. Easter celebrations are spectacular.

☀️

Summer — June to August

4/5 Beach season

30-35C. Peak beach season. Sea reaches 26C. Very busy — book everything ahead. July and August are extremely hot.

🍂

Autumn — September to October

5/5 Best overall

24-28C. Sea at its warmest. Crowds thin from mid-September. October is arguably the best month of the year to visit Malta.

❄️

Winter — November to March

3/5 Budget season

14-18C. Mild by northern European standards. Some rain. Perfect for history and culture. Flights and hotels much cheaper.

Top Tips and Common Mistakes

Book St Johns Cathedral in advance

Timed entry tickets sell out days ahead in peak season. Book online before arrival — it is Malta single most impressive sight.

Do not expect sandy beaches everywhere

Most coastline is rocky limestone. The sandy beaches such as Golden Bay and Mellieha are excellent but you must seek them out.

Visit a village festa

May to September: almost every village celebrates its patron saint. Fireworks, brass bands, street food — authentic Malta and completely free.

Do not drive into Valletta unprepared

Parking is scarce and expensive. Use the park-and-ride at the bus terminus, or take the Sliema ferry which costs just EUR 1.50.

Stay overnight in Gozo

Day-trippers miss the real magic. After the boats leave at 5pm the island becomes incredibly peaceful. One night changes everything.

Avoid Blue Lagoon in July midday

Tens of thousands of people crowd Comino in peak season. Take the first morning boat at 8am or visit in May, June or September instead.

Try a village pastizzeria

The best pastizzi cost 30-50c from small local bakeries. Ask a local where they go — the answer is always better than tourist spots.

Do not forget strong sun protection

The Mediterranean sun and reflective limestone are very intense. Factor 50, a hat and plenty of water — tourists burn very quickly in Malta.
